During the lockdown, many of us found our lives turned upside down. We stopped doing the things we loved and picked up habits that weren’t always healthy. While we’re still dealing with some lockdown restrictions, we’ve found small ways to make life feel more normal. However, our health has taken a hit, mainly due to gym closures or injuries from exercising in new ways.
But even with gyms still closed or when they eventually reopen, there are ways to stay healthy during these unusual times. Here are some practical tips:
1. Walking
You might not believe it, but you don’t need to run or cycle to stay fit. Walking has plenty of benefits for both your physical and mental health. It’s great for improving circulation and blood flow, shedding some pounds (you can burn about 200 calories in a half-hour), strengthening muscles, boosting sleep quality, and helping you relax mentally. What makes walking so popular is that it doesn’t need any special equipment— you just need the willingness to get up and spend about half an hour, or longer if you’re determined to burn more calories.
2. Eat Well
Lockdown made it easy to fall into the habit of ordering takeout or indulging in baking, but keeping a balanced diet is crucial for your health both now and in the future. Eating well is about balancing your meals with vegetables, proteins, carbs, and fats. A colorful plate full of fruits, veggies, lean meats, and natural fats is much more useful than obsessing over calorie counts. There are many apps available, like MyFitnessPal, which make it easy to track your calorie intake and meal plans, helping you eat enough and stay healthy. Remember, eating healthy doesn’t mean eating less; it’s about choosing the right foods.
3. Drink Water
Hydration is key to maintaining good health. Drinking lots of water improves concentration and helps prevent headaches and fatigue, issues commonly experienced when working long hours at a computer. Ideally, aim for at least two and a half liters of water daily, more if it’s hot out. Staying well hydrated not only refreshes your skin and boosts energy but also helps with mental clarity and better sleep. If plain water isn’t your thing, try adding slices of lemon or your favorite fruits to make it more enjoyable.
4. Have a Daily Routine
Without the usual daily structure of commuting and office work, you might find some days feel endless while others fly by. To counter this, establish a routine. If you’re working from home, plan your day in a diary. If you’re not working, use your time to schedule activities like walks or completing projects. Having a routine keeps your mind active and sets the tone for a productive day. Building a healthy and happy lifestyle is about gradually creating a sustainable routine, not an extreme lifestyle overhaul. Take small steps and build toward your ideal daily schedule.
