Water parks are the perfect places to cool down and enjoy some summer fun, but it’s important to stay safe while you’re there. Here are some tips to help you with that.

Before you head to your local water park, remember to take a shower before and after you hit the water rides. Since so many people visit water parks, germs can easily spread. Keep up good hygiene by washing your hands thoroughly after using the restroom, too.

Being out in the sun and playing in the water can dehydrate you quickly, so make sure to drink plenty of water. Try to avoid caffeinated sodas or drinks with artificial sweeteners because they can actually make you more dehydrated. Even though you’re surrounded by water, staying hydrated is crucial. Drinking lots of water helps prevent heat-related illnesses and replenishes what you sweat out. It’s definitely better than reaching for alcohol or sugary drinks that might dehydrate you further.

Don’t forget the sunscreen, whether it’s sunny or cloudy. Choose a waterproof one and reapply every couple of hours. Be careful not to get it near your eyes, and don’t skip the sunglasses.

Always follow the rules and pay attention to the ride guidelines. As parents, we often remind our kids to listen to the lifeguards and obey instructions. Check the signs at each attraction and listen to any audio or staff directions. There are reasons for those ride restrictions, like hidden drops or turns, so it’s important to follow what the staff says.

Keep an eye on your surroundings. It’s easy to get caught up in the fast pace of a water park, especially for kids. This is where accidents can happen. Running on slippery decks or sidewalks can be really dangerous, so always walk between attractions, no matter how excited you get.

Dress for the day with a hat and loose shirt when you’ve had enough sun. Keep an eye on how much sun young kids, especially toddlers, are getting. Being outside in the heat all day means you need to dress appropriately to avoid sunburn, heat stroke, or dehydration. This includes wearing water shoes, a hat, sunglasses, and a loose shirt when you need a break from the water.
